Cooking with child.... [01 Jun 2006|08:06pm]

is actually not as hard as you'd think! Lucia Ursula Krim (aka, [info]littlemisslucia) was born on May 25th at 3:48am...she's already gotten a tour of our kitchen, a visit to our favorite SF cheese shop, a fabulous lunch on a beautiful SF day with Babar at the Chloe Cafe (Church/Clipper) and gotten a sampling of taqueria-flavored breast milk - what a lucky girl. We're both deliriously tired but are still eating and cooking. Here's a look at our first week with our Little Tomato (who is in my lap as we speak)...
Thursday - Hospital food
Friday - Hospital food
Saturday - Take-out Chinese from Eric's on Church St.
Sunday - Chili Dogs and butter lettuce salad with mustard viniagrette
Monday - Al Pastor Tacos from El Toro Taqueria with Auntie Teddy
Tuesday - Pounded Chicken, Prosciutto-wrapped Asparagus, red leaf lettuce salad with mustard viniagrette and d'affinois cheese for dessert
Wednesday - Delicious Marinated Flank Steak Sandwiches on Grilled Sourdough with Grilled Onions, Poblanos and Chipotle Mayonaise (even better as leftovers - we'll revise the recipe and post it because YUMMMM), Black Beans and Corn Pudding
Tonight - Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Boursin Stuffed Pork Chops and Arugula Salad

Our last dinner in peace [23 May 2006|10:19am]
[ mood | anxious ]

The induction is officially scheduled for Wednesday at 6pm and my mom arrives this morning...so Kev and mines final dinner date last night was spent at my favorite SF restaurant, Delfina.

I love love love this restaurant - I love all the waitresses and the menu and the 2 times we've been, Kev has spotted famous people from Dead Poets Society (only Kev would recognize them too, ha). I started with my favorite favorite cocktail, a blood orange bellini.
First course: Salt cod with Fennel Flatbread, Crostini with White beans, Fish eggs and a fish but I forget its name.
Second Course: Spaghetti with tomato sauce - we were told it induces labor - ummm, nope!, green garlic soup with breadcubes.
Third Course: Leg of Lamb with cannellini beans and black olives, Roast Chicken with Trumpet Mushrooms.
Fourth Course: Espresso, Scharfenberge Chocolate Cake with Creme Anglaise, Buttermilk Panna Cotta with Candied Kumquats.

...no wonder I'm still gaining 3 pounds a week (to make my grand total 42 pounds - YIKES!).

Drowning my sorrows in Farro!!!!!!!!!!!! [22 May 2006|10:33am]
[ mood | cynical ]

Still no signs of Little Miss, so in the meantime, Kevin and I are still cooking...I'd actually prefer to go out because I'm starting to go a bit insane at this point but Kevin insisted on cooking up the farro he bought me from Whole Foods. Farro, an Italian staple, is semi-pearled barley - I've had it at a few different restaurants (Pomelo, Delfina) and I've been dying to try cooking it up myself! I imitated the way Pomelo served it - Farro with balsamic viniagrette tossed with corn, green onions, cherry tomatoes, parsley, topped with slices of steak and it was great!

Our first favas [19 May 2006|10:34am]
[ mood | confused ]

Wow, we haven't had any fava beans this spring season until last night. Thank you for bringing some home for us last night Kev to make Fava Bean Bruschetta - Mmmmmmmmm. If favas weren't so high maintenence, I'd eat them every day!!!!!! We then had a nice butter lettuce salad with mustard viniagrette and mustard and breadcrumb baked chicken. I drink wine now too - a glass and a half of pinot grigio - "YUMMMMMMM", says Little Miss.

Chez Krim Pizzeria [18 May 2006|02:52pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

Teddy my sis, and her boy Pete came over for a belly sighting...and for a visit to the wonderful 24th Street Cheese Shop (24th between Sanchez/Vicksburg)...and to eat a nice homecooked meal (college students!). We started with some great cheeses they picked out, an amazing salami (sorry to serve you nitrates again, Little Miss!), marcona almonds, thinly sliced apples and French green olives - I got a little carried away, hoping a fabulous cheese plate would jumpstart labor (nope!). Then, we served them up some of our yummy homemade pizza with fresh pizza dough (speaking of, I need to make more to freeze) -- one with 4-cheese blend from Trader Joes (great blend for pizza), basil oil, tomatoes, goat cheese and dried oregano (super delicious) and the other, a personal favorite, a corn/cilantro/lime pizza.

No signs of Little Miss [14 May 2006|09:04am]
[ mood | uncomfortable ]

Still no signs of Little Miss even after eating a dozen of my favorite spicy buffalo wings, jalapeno crab dip, a spicy Louisiana sausage and bbq chicken at Ernie's last night!

My Last Brunch [13 May 2006|02:20pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

On a whim, I prepared this lovely brunch of Gourmet French Toast (used a stale Puglisi loaf), Eggless Mini-Blueberry Muffins, Neiman Ranch bacon and sausage, fruit salad and Perfect Brunch Punch for me, Kev, JJ and Alyson this morning. My energy levels are quite bizarre these days (just 4 days from my due date) - some days I have tons and tons of it (like today), some days I have none of it (like yesterday).

Spring grilling [08 May 2006|10:56am]
[ mood | uncomfortable ]

We grilled a deliciously marinated flank steak (balsamic, worchestershire, olive oil, Zatarain's), corn on the cob and some super tasty little shitake mushrooms. I placed the stemmed mushrooms in a little aluminum foil basket that I created, then tossed them with some garlic oil, soy sauce, salt and pepper. They were so good, we're going to make them again tonight. And for dessert, we had the best best best mango ever -- only contributing more to my Hawaiian get-away fever I have right now.

Breadcrumbs with crunch [07 May 2006|10:21am]
[ mood | chipper ]

Kevin pounded out some boneless, skinless organic chicken breasts that we sprinkled with the most perfect breadcrumbs I've ever made. Here were some important factors contributing to their sucess...stale baguette, garlic oil, salt/pepper/herbs de provence, used big food processor and not the little wimpy one, baked them for about 6 minutes then sprinkled them on the pounded chicken and let them fry up in the pan juices. YUM! We sprinkled some on our red leaf lettuce salad and it was delicious!!!!!! Then, I made these very tasty eggless Oatmeal Cafe Latte Cookies...inspired by the amazing Cafe Latte cookie by Tom's Cookies in Macy's Cellar.

Homemade Mexican [06 May 2006|01:29pm]
[ mood | uncomfortable ]

We made our cinco de mayo feast almost completely from scratch...tacos with my all-time best El Som salsa, guacamole, slow-roasted pork and homemade refried beans (YUM). I got too lazy (or pregnant) to make homemade tortillas though and used store-bought ones. Una cena muy sabrosa!

Green curry fried rice [04 May 2006|10:12pm]
[ mood | uncomfortable ]

Just back from the Osha Thai at Geary/Leavenworth...the green curry fried rice is our new favorite dish! And the fried chicken wings were equally delicious! I wasn't a fan of the pad thai however and thankfully Kevin was being very kind with his rice...!

Little Senorita [29 Apr 2006|09:05am]
[ mood | cheerful ]

Homemade flour tortillas, avocado salsa, beans and perfectly-seasoned grilled wafer thin beef (Kev's secret ingredient in his dry rub is Zatarain's creole seasoning!)...if Little Miss doesn't come out loving Mexican food, I will be very surprised!

A baby shower [28 Apr 2006|03:35pm]
[ mood | content ]

What fun - Sarah, Shannon and Alyson threw Kev and I a couples baby shower last night (no games, no opening presents...it was pretty much a fabulous cocktail party with great food). I couldn't get enough of Shannon's crab dip with cumin pita crisps and the amazing cheeses Alyson picked out from Whole Foods. Thanks girls!!!!!!! I had so much fun, I feel hungover today!!!

Getting to know Faro [26 Apr 2006|01:38pm]
[ mood | busy ]

Yum, faro is my new favorite side dish - I had it last night at Pomelo (Church/30th) with corn, green onions, cherry tomatoes, parsley with a balsamic viniagrette topped with marinated slices of steak. I don't know anything about it - but I think it must be a mediterranean staple like couscous! I've got to get my hands on a bag of it and start experimenting!

Chorizo wake-up call [25 Apr 2006|05:42pm]
[ mood | exhausted ]

Last night for Spanish class, I made a Spanish soup called Caldo Gallego - it's a chorizo and kale soup. I followed a recipe from the Dean and Deluca cookbook, the one cookbook in my collection that I don't trust at all - their recipes are vague and filled with mistakes and ambivalent steps with no detail. I find myself whipping out their cookbook pretty often though because it contains some very interesting recipes and traditional dishes from other countries, such as Spain's famous Caldo Gallego.

Anyway, this soup rocks - Here's my version of Caldo Gallego - it's delicious! However, the 4am wide-awake-wake-up call that both Kev and I had from the flavorful chorizo was not so fun!

KEV, by the way, I just found a recipe for ribollita in Dean Deluca.....!!!!!!!!!!! We MUST make it. Maybe with some brandade...this weekend!!!!!!!

Bay Area Backroads... [24 Apr 2006|01:49pm]
[ mood | hungry ]

Our Mac & Cheese with Ham and Asparagus dinner last night was inspired by an episode of the terrible show Bay Area Backroads (no cable, so it was the best we could find on our 5 stations...!)...
